What Is A Portable Sawmill?

A portable sawmill is a mobile device designed for wood processing that is capable of cutting wood in various locations. It is designed so that the user can saw directly where the logs are located, reducing transportation costs and time.

Portable sawmills are simple to operate. The logs are laid flat on a steel bed, and the operator manually pushes the saw, which is powered to cut the log horizontally along the length of the bed. The most basic sawmill consists of a chain saw and a custom clamp, with similar horizontal operation.

Features of Portable  Sawmill

  • Mobility: Portable sawmills are usually equipped with wheels or trailers to facilitate movement between different locations, suitable for use in remote areas or construction sites.
  • Versatility: Such sawmills are able to process a variety of wood types, including logs, wood chips and other biomass materials, and are highly adaptable.
  • Efficiency: Portable sawmills can cut wood quickly, improve production efficiency, and are suitable for small batch production and personalized needs.
  • Ease of operation: The design usually takes into account the convenience of the user, making it simple to operate and suitable for users of different experience levels.

Types of Portable Sawmills

Band saw mill

A portable bandsaw machine consists of a flexible steel band saw blade that runs around two pulleys. It has a small frame with tracks that guide the saw head through the log. The bandsaw only cuts in the horizontal plane, cutting the entire width of the log as it is pushed in. The logs need to be turned over to remove the bark on both sides or to straighten them.

If the bark is still on the sides when cutting wide boards, these boards need to be reloaded onto the milling machine later to trim the edges on both sides. For commercial milling machines, many owners also use a trimmer on the milling machine to trim these boards. For these reasons, bandsaws are needed to handle a lot of logs and boards.

The advantage of a band saw is that the band saw blade is thinner, so more wood can be recovered because less sawdust and waste is produced per log. However, to make the most of this thinner cut, the operator does need to be skilled in ensuring that optimal sawing conditions are maintained at all times – sharp teeth, correct tooth settings, correct tension and correct feed rate. If any of these are incorrect, a flexible band will result in uneven, wavy boards. To recover these boards, a lot of planing is required to reduce them to a usable size, thus losing any initial kerf savings.

The bands on a band saw need to be sharpened frequently and replaced after three or four sharpenings. In a production operation, the cost of maintaining the blades on a band saw can be as much as $100 per day. This needs to be compared to the value of the wood being sawed and the cost of the kerf savings. Another important consideration is to look at the diameter of the log that can fit in the throat between the two pulleys, as this will determine whether it can be milled with a band saw.

Circular saw mill

Circular saws use a circular blade akin to an oversized table saw blade. These are the fastest sawmills, and their waste and yield are on par with bandsaws.

The speed of circular sawmills is important in more commercial situations, and you’ll find many circular sawmills at larger lumber mills (along with bandsaw sawmills). That speed is usually less important when operating a portable sawmill, though.

Don’t be afraid to get a circular sawmill if you come across a good option. You’ll likely find that a bandsaw mill meets your production needs and is easier to use, however.

Chain saw mill

Chainsaw sawmills use an oversized chainsaw blade, where interlinked teeth make larger cuts. The most basic chainsaw mill models provide a guide along which a separate chainsaw can be run.

This is the most affordable type of sawmill, but the fairly wide teeth produce much more sawdust and have a much lower yield.
Consider starting out with one of these if you’re on a budget, and then you can upgrade to a bandsaw mill in the future. Sometimes, a chainsaw milling guide and separate chainsaw is the only type of portable mill that can be carried to especially remote locations, such as an off-grid cabin, for example. Keep in mind that anything requiring a separate chainsaw will be limited by the size of your chainsaw.

What is a portable sawmill used for?

1. Lumber Production
Custom Lumber: Portable sawmills allow users to cut logs into specific sizes, producing custom lumber for individual project needs. This is useful for construction where specific sizes are required for building or furniture making.

Specialty Wood Products: They are ideal for producing specialty wood products that may not be readily available at lumberyards, such as unique hardwoods for furniture making or custom woodworking projects .

2. On-site Processing
Convenience: Portable sawmills can be transported to the location of the logs, eliminating the need to transport heavy logs to a stationary sawmill. This is particularly advantageous in remote areas or urban environments where moving logs is impractical .
Quick Setup: Many portable sawmills can be set up quickly, allowing logs to be milled as soon as they are harvested .

3. Building and Construction
Post and Beam Framing: Portable sawmills are efficient at cutting the large timber used in post and beam construction, allowing builders to build sturdy structures using locally sourced wood .
Cabin Construction: They are also used to mill logs for cabin construction, providing the necessary materials for building rural homes.

Benefits of Using a Portable Sawmill

Whether you are a woodworker, forest landowner, or want to start a small logging business, there are many reasons to purchase a portable sawmill.

Cost effective
By processing the wood yourself, you can significantly reduce or even eliminate the expense of purchasing wood from a supplier. Many owners sell planks, which can provide a positive return on investment for a portable sawmill.

Versatility
Portable sawmills allow you to process logs as needed. You can make boards of any thickness, up to and including the sawmill’s capacity. Being able to move your sawmill also allows you to process logs on your property or another location.

sustainability
Portable sawmills allow you to use locally sourced lumber, often from your own land. Processing trees that have been felled or must be felled for safety reasons is more environmentally friendly than commercially harvested trees. Carbon emissions are also reduced since logs do not need to be transported great distances, if at all.

Custom cutting function
You have complete control over how your logs are cut. Not only can you cut the board to any thickness and width you need (within the factory’s capabilities), but you can also cut it to match the board’s grain pattern.

1. Humanized microcomputer operation interface, simple and convenient operation.

2. High-precision rotary encoder with precision ball screw to control sawing thickness, higher precision.

3. Auxiliary return material system, saving manpower, labor and time.

4. High-end PLC integrated control system, safe and reliable.

5. Hydraulic saw blade tensioning automatic compensation system to ensure that the saw blade is always in the best tension state and extend the service life of the saw blade.

6. The conveyor belt uses hydraulic motor as transmission, which runs smoothly and constantly, has strong transmission force, and ensures that the workpiece is flat and smooth.

7. Specially designed multiple sets of clamping devices ensure that the wood can be reliably clamped during sawing to ensure safe operation.

8. The thickness tolerance of 0.1mm–0.25mm ensures that there will be no joint gap on the sawing surface.

9. The sawing path loss is only 1.1–1.6mm, which can save about 20% of materials compared with other processing methods, greatly reducing costs.
