Woodworking Four-Sided Moulders Introduction

A woodworking moulder is a type of planing/moulding product within woodworking machine tools. It is mainly used to process wooden products such as wood squares, wooden boards, decorative wood lines, wooden floors, etc., machining the top, bottom, and sides of the wood in a single pass. Woodworking moulders are generally compact in structure, featuring hard-chromed or hardened work surfaces for durability. The cutterhead spindles are specially processed for high precision. For the feeding system, it is best to use a stepless speed regulation mechanism, and the feeding roller and the reduction mechanism are connected with a universal joint to ensure smooth transmission and strong feeding.

Classification of Woodworking Moulders

Woodworking moulders are classified according to the number of cutterheads: four-head(four-sided) moulders, five-head (four-sided) moulders, six-headd (four-sided) moulders, and multi-head (four-sided) moulders, with some models having more than ten cutterheads. Four-sided moulders are generally suitable for large and medium-sized furniture factories. On the one hand, their purchase cost is high, and on the other hand, cutterhead setup and knife adjustment can be complex. Therefore, they are best suited for large-scale production or fixed process station production in large and medium-sized enterprises.

Small enterprises often use double-sided planers (or surfacers) to process the two primary surfaces (top and bottom) and use vertical spindle moulders (or edge moulders) or other planers to process the two side surfaces to save costs and reduce setup and knife adjustment time. The four-sided moulder has a strong production capacity. For example, a medium-sized six-cutterhead four-sided moulder can process more than two square meters of material per hour. Its efficiency is recognized in the industry.

Woodworking Moulders Processing Characteristics

Improve Processing Capacity and Production Efficiency

The four-sided moulder is a typical process-centralized, multi-tool combined machine tool. It concentrates machining operations that traditionally required multiple separate machines (such as jointer-planers, surface planers, and vertical spindle moulders) into one machine. It greatly improves processing capacity and production efficiency by drastically reducing auxiliary working time. Additionally, it reduces the number of traditional machines needed, saves on operating labor, and decreases required workshop floor space.

Improve Wood Yield

The four-sided moulder processes workpieces in a single pass. The workpiece can be machined to the required size, cross-sectional shape, and surface finish in one operation, avoiding material loss caused by multiple setups and repeated machining on different machines.

Improve Product Quality and Processing Accuracy

The moulder process completes multiple machining steps in one pass, reducing the cumulative accuracy errors inherent in traditional multi-machine processing. Since the four-sided moulder employs mechanical continuous forced pressing and feeding, there is minimal workpiece jump or displacement during cutting. The feed speed can be adjusted via variable frequency drive (VFD) or stepless speed regulation based on the wood species and cutting depth, which reduces quality defects caused by excessive cutting forces and improves product quality and processing accuracy.

Expand Process Range and Increase Product Variety

The four-sided moulder provides the necessary flatness and surface finish for the workpiece, creating essential conditions for subsequent processes and ensuring their accuracy. Beyond simple surface planing, the four-sided moulder can also perform profiling operations such as tenoning, grooving, straight line moulding, profile shaping, and multi-blade sawing, capabilities beyond traditional planing machines.

How to Choose a Suitable Woodworking Four-Sided Moulder?

When choosing a woodworking four-sided moulder, it is essential to select the number of tool axes and the adjustment position between the tool axes. Generally, this should be based on the shape of the workpiece to be processed, the batch size, the positioning during feeding, the determination of the processing benchmark, and the convenience of the workpiece passing through the tool axes. There is no definitive principle for selecting the woodworking four-sided moulder due to variations in the environment used and the types of workpieces to be processed. When selecting a machine tool, it is necessary to consider a primary processing direction, take into account the processing requirements of other directions, make overall arrangements, and comprehensively consider technical requirements and capital investment. The goal is to reasonably select a machine tool type that meets the most processing needs, minimizes expenses, and simplifies operation and maintenance.

1.Determine the Number of Tool Shafts According to the Required Cross-Sectional Shape of the Workpiece to be Machined

The number of woodworking four-sided moulder axes determines the machining capacity of the machine tool and primarily defines the cross-sectional shape of the workpiece that can be machined. In general, workpieces with regular cross-sectional shapes can be machined with four tool axes to meet the requirements. One surface is a profile surface, while the other three surfaces are flat surfaces. The workpiece can be machined by four-sided planing with five cutter axes, where the last cutter axis is preferably a rotatable and adjustable cutter axis. The processing of workpieces with complex cross-sectional shapes, such as birch grooves, birch heads, and decorative line profiles, requires seven-blade or eight-blade axis four-sided planing.

2.Select the Processing Capacity of the Machine Tool According to the Possible Processing Batches

The processing capacity of the machine tool mainly depends on the feed rate, the rotational speed of the tool shaft, and the cutting power. Generally, when the feed rate is high, the cutting amount (i.e., the width and thickness of the cut) should be small, and the rotational speed of the cutter shaft should be increased. When the feed rate is low, the cutting amount can be increased, and the rotational speed of the cutter shaft can be correspondingly reduced to meet motor power requirements. However, the speed should not be too low, as this will affect the quality of the machined surface. Within the allowable range of mechanical strength and stiffness, the higher the rotational speed of the machine tool spindle, the better the quality of the machined surface.

3.Determine the Mutual Position and Feeding Method Between the Tool Axes According to the Size Specifications and Accuracy Requirements of the Workpiece to be Processed

The maximum width dimension of the workpiece that can be processed by the woodworking four-sided moulder is a primary parameter of the machine tool. The section size, width, and height (thickness) of the workpiece determine the limit range of adjustment between the upper and lower horizontal tool axes and the left and right vertical tool axes, as well as the adjustment and positioning accuracy of the tool axes. Generally, each tool axis of the machine tool should not be at the limit position of its adjustable range; a certain margin should be left; otherwise, machining accuracy will be affected. Different feeding methods will influence the positioning and pressing of the workpiece during machining, thereby affecting the machining accuracy of the workpiece. Typically, for thin and long workpieces with poor rigidity, the pressing force of each pinch roller in the feeding mechanism is smaller, and correspondingly more pinch rollers are used. For workpieces with good rigidity, such as short square materials, the pressure of each pressing roller can be larger, and the number of pinch rollers can be reduced accordingly.
